A legend in this lifetime

It was cold winter’s night on 26 February 1802, just two hundred years ago. The 19th century was only two years old... when the tiny Victor was born in Besançon.

He was a child who would grow up to have a dramatic impact on France and French history, becoming a legend in his lifetime. His fame has never ceased to grow, such that today he is known the world over.

To celebrate the bicentenary of his birth, the Crocodile has decided to pay homage to him by creating a gastronomic menu inspired by his life and times, and accompanied by extracts from his original works.

As for his links with the region, not only did he travel to Switzerland, Germany and Alsace in 1839, a journey he described in his fascinating book, “The Rhine”, but legend has it that he was actually conceived in the Donon !

Drawing on his rich and eventful life, Victor Marie Hugo created a unique, multifaceted work that would profoundly influence French culture. Novelist, poet, prose writer, playwright, columnist, artist, philosopher, orator, visionary, politically involved as a Republican... in many ways a typical Renaissance man, he produced many of the 19th century’s finest works, his ideas, his art and his writing having a considerable influence throughout Europe.

As he seldom described the cuisine he so enjoyed, we invite you to explore some of the major culinary traditions of his period.

Our unique menu celebrates the pomp and circumstance of that great Romantic period, a period when restaurants as such were invented. We are also delighted to pay homage to some of the great chefs who have so influenced us.
